"Change in the Circumstance
and the
Circumstances Change"
PAUL DAVID COHN
Start Right and Stay Strong
If we were going to take a road trip across the country it would be a good idea to know where we are going. Unfortunately, when it comes to our life, whether it's personal or it has to do with our career, many of us only have a vague sense of what we want. Unless we have a clear understanding of what we want and where we
want to go, we are destined to end up in places we don’t want to be.

In this regard clarity reigns supreme. The clearer we are about the things we want, the more likely it is we will actually get them. But in order to guarantee that we end up where we want to be, we not only need to know where we are going, we need to know how we are going to get there. And we also need to know where we are
on the map.

If we don't know where we are on the map we will never know when to turn right, when to turn left, and when to keep going straight ahead.

This is the starting point for all success in life. Knowing what we want, knowing what we are going to do to get it, and knowing where we are in relation to getting where we want to go. But this is exactly the point where it can get a little complicated for some of us.

When traveling, people generally do the things that will ensure they have a successful trip. Most people know exactly where they are going and they also know the roads they are going to travel to get them there.

But just in case they get lost or a little off track, they have this thing called a GPS tracking system, which will notify them that they are going the wrong way and will also point them in the right direction.

Here is the problem: Most of us have an internal GPS tracking system that was programmed into our subconscious long ago by others, our experiences and even ourselves. This internal GPS tacking system is the guiding force behind what brought us to where we are today.
Some people refer to this inner GPS tracking system as “The Comfort Zone” but in reality it is much larger and more encompassing than that. It includes our comfort zone for sure but it also has embedded within its mechanism everything else that makes up our personality.

It includes all our hopes, desires and fears. But it also includes the things we value, the things we love and the things we hate. It includes the things we believe about ourselves and others but it also includes the things we really need. Basically it includes everything we are on the inside. It’s our "Model of the World" and it’s the filter through which we interpret and experience everything in our life.

And here is the challenge: Most of the things I just mentioned live within us on an unconscious level. I only mention this again because we may not even realize just how much they effect the decisions we make and the actions we take.

When tackling a new challenge or an unexpected event for instance, people either rise to the occasion and face it head on or they shrink back and try to avoid it. Both approaches have their positive and negative consequences that either help us or hurt us. It’s not so much whether one approach is better than the other. It’s really whether it’s an automatic response or not that determines whether it’s truly effective or not.

The way people generally react and respond to these kind of situations usually has more to do with the way their inner GPS tracking system has been programmed up to this point than it has to do with being a conscious choice. It has more to do with past conditioning than it has to do with present conditions.

Unfortunately, for too many of us, every time we try to go after something new or different we have this inner GPS tracking system that tries to convince us we are going the wrong way.
THIS KEEPS US STUCK RIGHT WHERE WE ARE
THIS IS THE MISSING PIECE TO THE PUZZLE
Inside all of us is an internal frame of reference that guides all of our decisions. This internal guidance system tells us what to expect from others, what to expect from ourselves and how we should live our lives.
This internal frame of reference is behind every choice we make and every action we take. When we understand it; we understand almost everything about ourselves.

If what you are doing on a regular basis is not serving you or if it’s not getting you what you want it may be time to take a look at your inner GPS tracking system because this is where the real solution will come from.

One thing is certain; whatever brought you to where you are today, will not be the same things that get you to where you want to be tomorrow.
This is especially true if the things you are going after are new and different. In order to stay strong and focused as we try to accomplish new things in our life we need to make sure our inner GPS tracking system is on board to help us and not hinder us from getting where we want to go.
THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO MAKE IT EASIER
TO GET ALMOST ANYTHING YOU WANT
One way is to make sure that what you want to do is in harmony with what you already value and appreciate. What you want to do here is make sure your external actions are aligned with what already exists in your "Model of the World."

The other way is to make some adjustments to your "Internal Frame of Reference" so that it supports your new intentions. It may be time to update a bit. Perhaps some things that were important to you in the past may no longer serve you in the present. What you want to do here is create a new "Like List."

No matter which one you choose the key is to be passionate about what you have to do in order to get what you want. People always get excited about their targets but they're not always excited about what they have to do in order to hit those targets.

This is where the challenge usually presents itself. We may want to be fit and healthy but we love fast food and deserts. The problem is not the target. The problem is what we really value. Change what you like first and getting what you want becomes easy.

There is an old saying that says, "If you love what you're doing you will never work a day in your life again." This is true when it relates to your career but it's also true for anything you want to accomplish in life. When you love what you have "to do" in order to get what you want, you will always find a way to do it. And as a
by-product of your actions you will end up getting what you want.

"Before I contacted Patsy for coaching I thought my marriage was over and my life was going nowhere. In fact, I felt like I was going backwards. I felt like my life was worse than it had been twenty years earlier. After my first coaching session with Patsy I felt better about myself and I felt better about my future. I decided I wanted to make some changes in my life and I wanted Patsy's help while I made those changes.

Today, ten years later I am in a new relationship with a man who is truly my soulmate. I am in a new career that is more fulfilling then I ever thought possible and I am happier now then I have ever been in my life. But more importantly, I now feel like I am the person I was always meant to be. I am so grateful for Patsy and the help I received from my coaching sessions with her. I wouldn't be where I am today without her help."

SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THAT WORD "GOALS"
Goals is a generic word for
anything you really want
that you are actively engaged with.
For too many it's a reminder of
"not getting what we want."
